Francofest 2016 Spotlights Vibrant Francophonie

Free festival weekend celebrates Francophone culture

(Hamilton, ON) A cultural beacon of francophone arts and culture festival on the Niagara Peninsula, FrancoFEST returns to beautiful and historic Gage Park June 24-26, 2016 to celebrate the region’s francophone arts community in a spectacular three-day open-air celebration.

A unique festival presented each summer by Centre français Hamilton, FrancoFEST brings together the region’s Francophone community and Canada’s top French speaking artists to spotlight the best of Francophone culture.

Featuring more than 20 performances in all, the festival will showcase music, dance, circus, theatre and performance art, visual arts and craft, and food.

The festival shines the spotlight on the best of the Francophone artistic community to proudly display to the general public. Festival-goers will discover emerging and reconnect with established talents. The main stage will showcase over a dozen bands and Gage Park’s grounds will host circus, dance, food, theatre, artisans and more — all in a fun atmosphere.

FrancoFEST will open on the evening of Friday, June 24 with a full performance from Vague De Cirque, a zany, acrobatic and visually imaginative circus troupe from Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec. After launching FrancoFEST under the circus tent, Vague de Cirque will return for shorter big top performances throughout the weekend.

Over a dozen big musical acts will also perform on stage at FrancoFEST. On Saturday, June 25, the festival hosts performances by singer-songwriters Yann Perreau (Montreal, QC) and Stef Paquette (Sudbury, ON), spirited pop chanteuse Sally Folk (Montreal, QC), rootsy genre-hopper Bernard Adamus (Montreal, QC) and pop-punk crowd-pleasers Les Trois Accords (Drummondville, QC). On Sunday, June 26, audiences can enjoy performances from Franco-Ontarian pop breakout Gabrielle Goulet (Ottawa, ON), country-folk five-piece Les Chercheurs D'or (Quebec City, QC), afro-groove ensemble Kabakuwo (Montreal, QC), and chart-topping singer-songwriter Alex Nevsky (Montreal, QC), as well as Senegal-born, JUNO-nominated pop songsmith Karim Ouellet (Quebec City, QC) who will perform a symphonic concert with members of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra (Hamilton, ON).

FrancoFEST will also showcase an incredible assortment of kinetic and visually creative performances from a variety of artists. The festival will feature a performance Pierre et le loup, a production of Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf staged by Jeunesses Musicales Canada (Montreal, QC). The delightfully absurd and imaginative theatre troupe Espace Forain (Outaouais, QC) will serve as festival MCs as well as roaming performance artists. Audiences will also enjoy the energetic dance ensemble Lua Shayenne & Company (Toronto, ON), which merges traditional African and contemporary dance as well as phenomenal aerial performance troupe Hamilton Aerial Group (Hamilton, ON).

FrancoFEST-goers will also be able to browse and shop among dozens of artisan booths and enjoy a wide variety of foods offerings — including Franco-Canadian, Haitian and Congolese foods. For the younger crowd, FrancoFEST will also offer entertaining activities especially for children, including shows and workshops, in a warm and welcoming family atmosphere.
